Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse the conception of self implied in the Ethics of Care. This ethical theory would presuppose a specific type of self-identity, that can be called a “relational self”, by which the individual is understood from his relationships with others. Basing on two articles written by authors related to the Ethics of Care - Carol Gilligan e Nona Lyons -, we shall discuss two main points: a- the difference between the Ethics of Care and others ethical theories – specially the “ethics of justice” ? can be understood from specific conceptions of self-identity, implied in those theories; b- the Ethics of Care can contribute in a relevant way to contemporary discussions about the relation between ethics and personal identity.
