This article enquires about the function of the grandfather in the contemporary family, stating that he occupies a marginal place, involving a bigger distance from the family roles and stereotypes, which allows him to act in emergency situations, for the care of the grandchildren. The theme is developed following the report of an author’s patient in psychoanalysis.References
