This article aims to establish a dialogue between psychoanalysis and philosophy on the issue of helplessness. Our main thesis defended in this work focuses on pointing out teleology as one of humanity's greatest defense mechanisms against its existential miseries. In this endeavor, we used texts by Freud that seek to reflect social, political and anthropological demands that end up referring to the theme of helplessness, such as The Future of an Illusion (1927); Mass Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921); as well as Totem and Taboo (1913), which were crucial in this endeavor for the development of this article. And with regard to philosophy, we brought to the development of the discussion the German philosophers Ludwig Feuerbach, weaving his visceral critique of religion, and Friedrich Nietzsche with his critique of nihilism.Downloads
