The present article approaches the issue of indwelling of the psyche in the soma in D. W. Winnicott, also called personalization, underlining the inherent difficulties of that process. We have defined the concepts of soma, psyche and mind pointing out the fact that the author has substituted the traditional opposition between body and mind for the problem of integration between soma and psyche; and demonstrated that Winnicott ?s findings – that innumerable primitive elaborations lie beneath the subsequent acquisitions of the maturational process –, originating from his clinic with patients in states of regression. The term imaginative elaboration has been defined to explain the conquest of the status of the psychosomatic unity – and further psychic developments – and the distortions thereof; and the psychosomatic disturbance has been briefly explained as one of the problems related to that acquisition.References
